In the recent past, when I was reviewed by my Boss Shankar, he asked me what is my goal in the 6 months to one year. Obviously , I was interested in Individual Contributor role. when I asked the same question to my reportees, majority of them did not have any idea. they are only worried about good or excellent rating so that their job is safe. I believe many of us are making mistake by thinking like that. if someone is competent , why do worry about rating and job. if someone has got competency, automatically one gets good rating and also retains job in the days. what is imp for apprisal is understanding short comings and learn from mistakes to achieve individual and organization goals.
