There two resons, as I understand.
one is SUN server business is lucrative
Second point is tricky.
We all know that there are 2 ways we can implement the Java specification
pay Sun money, or ensure your code is "mostly derived from the OpenJDK". Infact IBM pays money every year for use of Java specification.
Java versions have java specification and Java Implementations thru JDK. SUN is making Implementation kits as Open source but not Java Specifications.
Thats gives hold for SUN in Java world. Apache, as non profit org, is fighting a legal aspect with SUN on this issues.
